President Donald Trump on Saturday thanked House and Senate Republicans for moving the largest overhaul of the nation’s tax code in decades closer to completion.
“Biggest Tax Bill and Tax Cuts in history just passed in the Senate,’ Trump wrote on Twitter. “Now these great Republicans will be going for final passage. Thank you to House and Senate Republicans for your hard work and commitment!”
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Senate Republicans advanced their tax plan on a 51-49 vote, after hours of votes on amendments and last-minute deals tucked into the 479-page bill. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) was the only Republican who voted to oppose the legislation’s final passage.
The next move for Republicans is for the House and Senate to go to conference committee where representatives from each house will seek to hash out differences between the two bills. If Republicans fail to agree on a compromise bill, then one of the chambers would be required to pass the other’s legislation to get the tax plan to Trump’s desk.
Trump and senior GOP leaders have said that they would like their plan to be signed into law before Christmas.
