Montrez Jefferies is a homeless teenager. His life hasn’t been an easy one, but when he stumbled upon a $500 money order, he knew he had to return it to its rightful owner. The teen who resides at the Durham Rescue Mission’s Center for Hope, could have easily cashed the money order and kept the $500, but he’s trying to turn his life around, and knew keeping the money would be taking a step back in his journey to be a better person.
The teen took the money order and handed it over to the staff at the mission. They then took to the internet to find its owner. They tracked her down by the name on the money order. According to staff-member Sultan Alhokair, the woman hadn’t yet realized she lost the money. The woman who wished not to be named works two jobs and had simply been too busy to notice the money order was missing from her purse.
The woman came to the mission to retrieve her money and to meet Jefferies. She offered the boy a sincere thank you and two gift cards for his honesty and integrity. The young man has stated that in years past he would have simply cashed the money order and went on with his day. Now, he says he’s trying to stay on the straight and narrow, and hopes to return to school soon.
