In this day and age, illegal cellphones in correctional institutions represent a major security threat. In addition, cellphones illegally brought into correctional facilities can pose a very significant threat to the safety of the general public.

The horrible tale of Robert Johnson underscores how serious the problem of illegal cellphones in correctional facilities is at this juncture. Johnson was a skilled, experienced correctional officer with the Florida Corrections Department.

While working one day, Johnson discovered a box filled with contraband that an inmate, or inmates, attempted to bring into the institution. Thanks for Johnson’s efforts, what was estimated to be about $50,000 worth of contraband was kept out of the correctional facility.

Following Johnson’s actions, the inmate who was behind the smuggling scheme decided that revenge was in order. The inmate had in his possession and illegal cellphone. He had the ability to communicate with his associates in the outside world, including individuals who evidently were fellow gang members.

Retaliating against Johnson, the inmate used his illegal cellphone to order a hit on the correctional officer. The associate followed the inmate’s directives and broke into Johnson’s home early on morning.

Johnson was shot multiple times and barely survived the attack. Fortunately, no other members of his family were injured in the assault.

Following nearly losing his life, Johnson has made it his calling to eradicate illegal cellphones from correctional institutions across the United States. He speaks about his own experiences. He strives to convince correctional agencies to take the threats presented by illegal cellphones seriously.

Securus Technologies has tracked the number of illegal communications its technologies prevented during a one year period at eight institutions. Securus Technologies reports that during this one year time period, it prevented a shocking 1.7 million illegal inmate communications. Once again, it is important to bear in mind that this 1.7 million prevented illegal communications occurred at only eight correctional institutions. There are thousands of correctional facilities of all types on the federal, state, and local levels.
