Dr. Rick Shinto has more than 20 years of experience in management and healthcare. Rick, a specialist in internal medicine and pulmonology, is the current Chief Executive Officer and President of InnovaCare Health Solutions. He also serves as Chief Executive Officer of MMM HealthCare. He received his Bachelor of Science (B.S) from the University of California at Irvine. He then went further to obtain a medical degree from State University of New York, and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) from the University of Redlands.
Dr. Shinto began his career as a pulmonologist in southern California. From 1996-1997, Rick served as the Corporate Vice President of Medical Management for MedPartners, a healthcare staffing firm in the US. After leaving MedPartners, he went on to become the Chief Medical Officer of Cal Optima Health Plan in California. He then moved to Medical Pathways Management Company where he became Chief Medical Officer and Chief Operations Officer. After leaving Medical Pathways, he moved to North American Medical Management (NAMM). NAMN was a publicly traded company. Its main business was helping physicians and other providers in their managed care operations. In 2002, PhyCor, the parent company of NAMM, filed for bankruptcy. However, the filing did not include NAMM’s operations. NAMM reemerged as a subsidiary of Aveta Inc., a newly formed company. Rick was a member of Aveta’s management board. He then served as its President and CEO from 2008 until its sale in 2012.
Under his leadership, Aveta grew to become one of the biggest providers of managed healthcare in the USA. Aveta was creditable for its use of advanced technology and innovative models. By 2012, Aveta had 300,000 commercial members and 230,000 Medicare beneficiaries. Rick’s achievements with Aveta were noticed. In 2012, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, one of the most prestigious awards for entrepreneurs. It is awarded to people who achieve extraordinary success in areas such as innovation and commitment to their companies or communities.
After leaving Aveta, Dr. Shinto became the CEO of InnovaCare Health Solutions and MMM Holdings. MMM Healthcare Inc. provides Medicare Advantage health plans for the elderly and special needs people in Puerto Rico. It serves more than 20,000 Medicare members and 7,500 medical providers. MMM is part of the InnovaCare group of companies. It is the only National Committee for Health Assurance (NCAQ) accredited heath plans provider in Puerto Rico. InnovaCare is a leading provider of healthcare services in North America.
To add to his profile, Rick is a regular publisher in several medical journals. He has served as a member of the PacifiCare Quality Improvement Committee and the Health Net Quality Improvement Council. Dr. Shinto’s success can be attributed to his support for staff members. MMM has been recognized, more than once, as one of Puerto Rico’s best employers. He is committed to giving employees a favorable working environment and a sense of belonging. Eventually, Dr. Shinto’s dream is to see a system where health services payment is based on the quality of care.
